Read those totals as ranges, not quotes. A tight-access site with poor batter geometry can push any of the three well above the top of its band, and a clean site with a stable rock batter can pull sleeper toward the bottom. Drainage — the line item that ends most retaining wall arguments

Retaining wall drainage is not optional on Melbourne sites. The city sits on a belt of reactive clay soils — dominantly Class M, H1 and H2 under AS 2870 — that swell when wet and shrink when dry. Water trapped behind a retaining wall on that clay produces two failure modes: hydrostatic pressure that pushes the wall over, and expansive clay heave that lifts the wall’s footing at the back and cracks it at the toe. Either failure mode collapses the wall before its structural design life. Both are prevented by drainage that is designed and installed properly — and both are effectively guaranteed on walls where drainage was value-engineered out.

The base drainage detail for any Melbourne wall over 800mm is a 100mm slotted subsoil ag pipe wrapped in geofabric, laid at the back of the wall on a graded base, backfilled with clean 20mm no-fines drainage aggregate to at least half wall height, capped with impervious material or geofabric to stop fines migrating in, and terminated with a positive connection to the stormwater system — a pit, a legal point of discharge, or a soakwell where the site permits. Weep holes through the wall face are supplementary, not a substitute.
